Ride the wind with Air Play, a modern circus spectacle that brings life to the air we breathe. Prepare for flying umbrellas, larger-than-life balloons and giant kites to float over your head, while the biggest snow globe you’ve ever seen will make you gasp in wonder and laugh till it hurts.
Direct from New York, this all-ages theatrical extravaganza lands in New Zealand for strictly limited seasons, playing Dunedin, New Plymouth, Tauranga and Auckland from 28 September.
Described as a visual poem, Air Play is a fun feast for the eyes that transcends cultures and leaps over borders, and has delighted audiences everywhere from Chile to China, Portugal to the Netherlands since its world premiere in 2015.
Air Play is a totally enchanting encounter for kids, and the perfect reset for world-weary adults. It’s a hybrid of entertainment styles: part comedy, sculpture, circus, and theatre.
Two siblings journey into the unknown. Making the ordinary extraordinary, they transform domestic objects into images of unparalleled beauty. Expect balloons to have a mind of their own, confetti to turn into the night sky, and a gigantic canopy of silk to envelop you.
Husband and wife team Seth Bloom and Christina Gelsone merge their unique circus and street theatre skills in Air Play with the sculptural artistry of collaborator Daniel Wurtzel. First meeting at a circus in Afghanistan, Bloom and Gelsone became engaged whilst performing in Scotland, and married in China. They’ve created five shows, juggled on The Late Show with David Letterman, headlined at the Big Apple Circus and performed in over 23 countries together.
Brooklyn-based kinetic sculptor Daniel Wurtzel has carved a significant career internationally, creating work with Cirque du Soleil, Julie Taymor, Robert Lepage and for the Sochi Winter Olympics.
“Air Play holds the whole audience in the palm of its outstretched hand. A winning combination of visually stunning sculptures and cheeky but heartfelt storytelling that keeps both adults and children enthralled - BRITISH THEATRE GUIDE
“…Fun for all ages is a common puff in the arts, but with Air Play it’s strictly true”
