BIRDCARE AOTEAROA – TE WĀ O NGĀ PĒPI: BABY BIRD SEASON
It is already spring and will soon be summer. BirdCare Aotearoa’s nursery is filling with tiny new arrivals. Ngā manu pēpi (baby birds), who have lost their parents and can't survive alone. From fly-catchers, fruit eaters, nectar-feeders, to songbirds and young raptors, we anticipate hundreds of orphaned admissions, rescued by the thoughtful public, vets and rangers.
Their stories are the same: parents lost to predation, storms, window collisions, cars, starvation and shrinking habitats. Rescued from misfortune, BirdCare Aotearoa provides a vital second chance, on a journey of care and recovery.
In our nursery, manu pēpi are hand-fed, kept warm and hydrated, and guided through numerous developmental milestones. Beyond feeds and health checks, we provide species-specific environments for socialising and adapting to native habitats.
This dedicated mahi (work) involves chirps of clinical science and aroha, sprinkled with high-protein and patience. Within weeks to months, when ready, each bird can fly our "nest", and return to the ngahere (forest) and moana (sea), where they belong.
For BirdCare Aotearoa, baby bird season is our busiest and most costly time of year. Specialised diets, heating, medical supplies and hands-on time are very costly for our charity. We rely on the generosity of our community to keep the nursery running. Every donation helps to grow these pēpi. We warmly welcome business partners, keen to make a lasting impact on local birdlife.
This year, you can follow along more closely than ever. We will go live on Facebook and Instagram, and our continuous Twitch livestream now ready for take off— offers a rare window into the day-to-day life of the nursery.
